Braves’ goal: Sell half of SunTrust Park as season tickets

The Braves expect to sell about half the seats in SunTrust Park as season tickets, according to the team’s executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Derek Schiller said “a new phase” of sales will launch in early May, when the Braves will begin aggressively marketing 2017 season tickets to the general public.

Sales efforts for the new Cobb County ballpark — slated to open next year — began last summer but to this point have focused on current season-ticket holders and some others in team databases, Schiller said.

More than half of the 4,000 premium seats in SunTrust Park have been sold, he said. Including non-premium seats, he said the team is on pace to have about 10,000 season tickets for 2017 sold by May.

Its goal is to sell about 20,000 by the ballpark’s opening.

“Of approximately 41,000 seats in SunTrust Park, we expect to have about half filled with season tickets .. and the other half with people purchasing single-game tickets or in groups,” Schiller said.

If achieved, 20,000 season tickets wouldn’t constitute a franchise record – the Braves sold about 29,000 in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in 1993 – but likely would double the current season-ticket base. (The Braves don’t disclose that number, but it was believed to be in the vicinity of 10,000 last year.)

The Braves haven’t publicly released a full list of ticket prices for specific sections in the new stadium. They have said the 4,000 premium seats will range from $85 to $475 and the roughly 37,000 non-premium seats from $6 to $90 per game in season-ticket packages, with about 19,000 seats said to be priced below $20.

Some season-ticket holders, however, have expressed sticker shock about the prices of lower-bowl premium seats between the dugouts, saying they have tripled in price compared to seats in similar locations without the premium amenities at Turner Field.

A full seating chart with all prices will be released when the next phase of season-ticket sales begins in May, Schiller said.
