A TechCrunch article: So, Recode reported today that Twitter was tinkering around with the idea of expanding its 140 character limit to a number a bit higher….10,000 characters. But what,...

I wrote recently that Twitter isn’t hard to use, despite what you may have heard. In that column, I suggested creating Twitter lists, and many of you reached out to ask me how to do it.
Great question, and thank you for bringing it up. Here’s everything you need to know to be a Twitter list pro.
A list lets you read tweets from groups of users that you curate. So you can have a Twitter list of baseball players or a Twitter list of family members. You don’t have to be following someone to add them to a Twitter list. Not only can you create them, you can subscribe to others’ lists as long as the lists are public. It’s important to stress that you can’t interact with a list, just read from them.
How to create a list
On a computer, go to your Lists page either via the profile icon drop down at the top right of the screen or by going to your profile and clicking where it says lists. In the Twitter app, go to your profile and click the gear icon. Then click view lists. Click create list (hit the plus sign in the app) followed by a short description and then choose public or private. A public list can be seen by anyone, a private list is just for you. You can change back and forth at any time as needed. Click save list and you’re set.
Adding and removing people from lists
Go to the profile page of the person you want to add. Click the gear icon and select add or remove from lists. Note: It’s OK to add someone with a protected/private profile, but only the people who are mutually connected with that person can see their tweets in a Twitter list. So different users might see additional or fewer tweets in a list containing a protected/private account.
Viewing a list
Go to your profile and click lists. Choose the list you want to view and you’ll see a separate timeline containing just those accounts in the list.
Editing and deleting lists
Go to your profile and click lists. Choose the list you want to edit. Here you can edit, delete, change the description and change visibility between public and private. This isn’t where you’d add and remove people from the list (see above).
How to subscribe to someone else’s lists
This is cool. Go to that person’s profile page and click on lists. You’ll now see their lists. Click subscribe on what interests you. Bonus tip: This is where a good description comes in handy.
How to share your list or someone else’s list
Simply go to the list you want to share and copy the URL from the browser bar. You can share this link just as you can any other link and people can subscribe to it right from here.
A few more things to know about Twitter lists
• You can only create 1,000 lists.
• Each list can contain no more than 5,000 users, although that’s way too many people for a list. My recommendation is 100 accounts or fewer, although I’ve gone over that limit depending on the situation.
• The name of a list must be 25 characters or fewer
• The name of a list cannot begin with a number
Think of a Twitter list as a mini timeline. If you follow 5,000 people, your timeline will contain updates from 5,000 accounts at once. If you put five people you reference often in one list, you’ll have a mini timeline that’s much easier to manage and read. Lists will make you a better and more efficient Twitter user in no time.
